Many dogs in Phuket live on the street or in temples and have no owners. Soi Dog Foundations aim is to reduce the number of stray dogs and cats on the island through mass sterilization and to improve the condition and lives of the remaining strays. To this end they have now sterilized over 18,000 dogs and cats on Phuket alone and run a shelter and re homing center which houses over 200 stray dogs and puppies at any one time, most of them rescued from cruelty and abuse or simply abandoned.
We simply could not function without volunteers. The cost of running the shelter and maintaining our sterilization and treatment programs are immense, and sadly unless we can generate more income we will have to slow down on the number of sterilizations we currently perform. The number of stray dogs on the island has reduced significantly and the last thing we want to see is for this trend to reverse. This is why we need more volunteers, whether it be to work hands on with the dogs, or in the background taking care of the administration, and of course fund raising without which we could not operate. SDF relies totally on donations.
Current volunteers come from all walks of life and many different countries, including The UK, USA, South Africa, Germany, Australia, Switzerland and Japan.

Volunteer Opportunity Descriptions:
Working at the shelter: SDF volunteers work under the guidance of SDF and the resident vet, Jobs at the shelter include showing animals to potential adopters, helping adopters fill out the required paperwork, and caring for the animals (walking the dogs, giving the cat’s attention, grooming, etc.)
Grooming: A well-groomed dog is much more adoptable than a shaggy, mud-covered, matted mutt. If you have any experience giving pooches haircuts and bath, please help us help the animals put their best paw forward. Even if you just have the patience needed to wash a dog or brush a long-haired dog, we could use your help.
Foster care:If you have some extra space in your home, please consider fostering a dog or cat that is going to a new life overseas. It takes approximately 4 months for the formalities to be completed in most cases.
Photography: SDF is always taking pictures of new animals for the website. And it is useful to have pictures of SDF events and activities for the website and the newsletter. If you have a knack for digital photography, please consider this opportunity.
PR/publicity: Are you good at writing? Do you have any media contacts? SDF needs individuals to help write press releases, advertisements, fliers, and brochures for our events and activities.
Fundraising: Success in fundraising will allow us to further our goals and help more of the unwanted and abandoned animals on Phuket. Fundraising can take many forms, from smaller one-time projects that try to obtain basic operating funds or supplies to larger or long-term projects that are looking to raise greater amounts to support projects like the spay/neuter fund or building our own shelter one day. Fundraisers need to be able to interact successfully with the general public and be creative in coming up with new fundraising schemes. Fundraising can be done on an individual basis or as part of a group. Develop/maintain the spay/neuter program: SDF needs Thai people who are willing to talk to local Thai veterinary practices and local Thai residents and explain the benefits of spay/neuter services for their animals to help our spay/neuter program to be a success. This volunteer opportunity may also require working with SDF fundraisers to ensure funding. Help us limit or eliminate the number of unplanned pregnancies in Phuket’s dog population.

So as you can see the possibilities are endless. We can guarantee that you won’t get rich financially doing this work but the rewards in other ways are immense.
