Every Dog Has its Day
Benefits of Spaying & Neutering

What is Spaying or Neutering?

Spaying or neutering is the surgical removal of certain reproductive organs (in the female, the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries; in the male, the testicles). Neuter surgery on female animals is sometimes called "spaying." The surgery prevents females from becoming pregnant and prevents males from impregnating females.

Animals are anesthetized during the surgery to spare them from pain.

Spaying and neutering is the only effective and humane method of reducing the number of strays on the streets of Phuket and the benefits are numerous. Its potential for helping save animals' lives is tremendous.

1) Sterilized dogs are less likely to roam and cause traffic accidents.

2) Spay/neutering reduces the number of dog fights due to territorial and male sexual aggression, making your neighborhood a quieter place.

3) Pregnant or nursing females are protective, more aggressive and territorial. Eliminate the litters and you eliminate this behavior making your community a safer place.

4) Sterilized dogs are generally calmer and less threatening.

5) Fewer dogs mean a cleaner, healthier and safer environment for us all.

If you are a pet owner, spaying or neutering your own dog not only increases the lifespan of your pet but also greatly improves its quality of life.

Spaying
The surgical removal of the females ovaries and uterus.

2) Eliminates pyometra and ovarian cancer.

3) They are less at risk of contracting sexually contagious diseases.

4) Eliminates the heat cycle, messy spotting and reduces undesirable behaviors.

5) Male dogs don’t gather in your backyard, howling and fighting!

Neutering (castration)
The surgical removal of the male's testicles.

1) Male dogs are less inclined to roam or fight.

2) It reduces problems with territorial and sexual aggression, inappropriate urination and other undesirable male behaviors caused through sexual frustration.

3) They are generally more affectionate.

4) They are less at risk of contracting sexually contagious diseases.

5) Neutering decreases the chances of developing hernias, prostate tumors and infections.

6) Neutering eliminates testicular cancer.

When is it done?

Spaying or neutering is generally done around the age of six months; however, many veterinarians are now doing the surgery on animals as young as eight weeks. Consult your veterinarian for his or her recommendation. Remember, the sooner you have your animal altered, the sooner you can stop worrying.
