Today an estimated 20,000 stray dogs and cats roam the streets of Phuket. For decades, they have been killed or relocated in a misguided attempt to reduce numbers.
|
It hasn't worked! Research proves exactly the opposite -- If stray dogs are removed, nature compensates -- stray dogs from other areas move in, litter sizes increase and the problem starts all over again.
Spay/neuter is the only effective and humane method to reduce the number of stray and abandoned dogs on our streets. Sterilising a single female prevents the birth of 67,000 puppies over six generations.
Sterilizing prevents countless unwanted puppies being born and the subsiquent generations thereafter. |

SDFs Birth Control efforts focus on helping individual communities to reduce the number of stray dogs in their area through a "trap, neuter & release" program. With help from local vets and through our own spay/neuter clinic, dogs (and feral cats) are sterilized, vaccinated, collared, tattooed, treated for sickness, injuries and released back to their Home territory. Through leaflets and word-of-mouth we explain the Schools Program local people are taught about the benifits of sterilisation and vaccination of stray dogs and how it will improve their lives on the streets and the communities in which they live.
